The self-proclaimed rebel general and Leader, general Bilikoliko Mingenya of the Mai-Mai militia Union des Patriotes pour la Défense du Congo (UPDC), surrendered to the Armed Forces of the DRC with 290 of his fighters this Sunday, February 2, 2020 in the town of Sake, Masisi territory in North Kivu.
This militia group has been operating in this North Kivu territory for more than 20 years now. He said he would surrender, to answer the call of the Head of State Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo and that of the FARDC Chief of Staff who want all the armed groups to lay down their arms in order to favor the pacification of the ‘East of the country ravaged by wars.
“We followed the message of the President of the Republic when he told us to leave rebel life. Here we are with 290 combatants but 150 others are arriving. It is time for our country to be pacified and among us those who are going to go to the army, we are going to contribute to this process, “declared the self-proclaimed general Bilikoliko.
They handed over more than 50 weapons and ammunition of war of several types including rockets and other weapons capable of shooting down a helicopter, in the hands of General Willy Yamba Kabangu, commander of operations Sokola 1.
According to Major Guillaume Ndjike, the hunt for other negative groups that do not agree to surrender continues “until their total eradication”.
Meanwhile, An officer of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) was killed in a rebel attack attributed to a group of armed men not yet identified in the city of Sake, in Masisi territory, some 20 km from Goma, capital of North Kivu province, the night of Friday to Saturday February 1, 2020.
The information was reported by local civil society activist. She also said that two other soldiers were seriously injured in the attack. This situation led to the paralysis of socio-economic activities in the region this Saturday.
“There were gunshots. These bandits kidnapped a pharmacist named Mutendo. And when they returned, they killed a major who was returning from his home and a shopkeeper by the name of Muhindo. Let the authorities help us. Otherwise, in the Kamuronza grouping precisely in Sake, things are not going well, ”said Jérémie Kangu, president of civil society in Sake.
It should be noted that this attack comes at the time when numerous militias surrender to the Armed Forces of the DRC in the territory of Masisi.
