The Democratic Republic of Congo has decided to close its borders with that of Rwanda from 3 p.m. from this Friday, June 17, 2022. It was the director of the General Directorate of Migration (DGM) in North Kivu who announced it in an interview given to us.
According to Ngoy Mukalay, this decision will go until further notice.

“Following the incident that happened at the small barrier, the borders will be closed from 3 p.m. this Friday until further notice. That’s the decision,” he said briefly.

Tension has risen a notch between Kigali and Kinshasa following the resumption of hostilities by the M23 terrorists, particularly in the territories of Rutshuru and Nyiragongo since mid-May. This terrorist outfit currently occupies the border town of Bunagana, near Goma.

This Friday, the situation degenerated at the small barrier of Goma, border with Rwanda. A soldier of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) was shot dead by Rwandan police in Rubavu. A situation that has further heightened the tension than it already is. Long before, the inhabitants of Goma protested against the aggression of the DRC by Rwanda and Uganda.

Witnesses on the scene said that the Congolese soldier crossed the border at the small barrier without authorization and started shooting at the Rwandan guards who then shot him.

This serious border incident angered the population of the city of Goma, who organised yet another spontaneous demonstration 200 meters from the border. Socio-economic activities are also paralysed in Birere, the commercial centre of Goma.

Experts from the Joint Verification Mechanism arrived at the scene to observe the damage, while the military and police authorities in Goma are negotiating the repatriation of the body of the killed soldier.

This incident aggravates the tension that currently exists between Kinshasa and Kigali following the latter’s support for M23 terrorists in Rutshuru territory.

On Wednesday, an intense demonstration took place in Goma to protest against the aggression of the DRC by Rwanda and its president Paul Kagame. The population also wanted to support the Congolese loyalist forces engaged on different fronts in North Kivu.
